Sleep
Getting enough sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. During sleep, our bodies work to restore our mental and physical health, helping us to heal, learn, and consolidate memories.
Most adults will need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night.
People with gastroparesis may experience difficulty getting enough sleep, or getting good quality sleep, due to discomfort and nausea.
While gastroparesis symptoms can make sleeping more difficult, following some healthy sleeping habits can help prevent avoidable sleeping difficulties.
Healthy sleeping habits:
- Maintain a sleep schedule by going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning.
- Use relaxation techniques before bed (e.g. meditation, breathing exercises)
- Avoid napping during the day, as this can make it more difficult to fall asleep at night
- Exercise daily
- Avoid stimulants like caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol in the hours before bed as these can affect quality of sleep
- Make sure your sleeping area is cool, dark, and quiet with good airflow
